When I was in sixth grade, one of my teachers, Mrs. McNamara, wrote in my yearbook: “One day we will all hear of a famous writer–YOU!” I had NO idea she thought I was talented and I have clung to those words ever since. I spent most of my high school years writing really bad love poetry but I knew one day I’d write for a living. I tried my hand in acting and hosted an international television show covering the fashion world. It was in Spanish and considering I didn’t speak the language–I usually looked like a deer caught in headlights. My first on camera interview was with Carolina Herrera and she was so gracious and elegant even though I was flubbing lines I knew–but couldn’t pronounce! I did some work for MTV, appeared in various commercials and music videos–even worked as an “extra” in a few feature films. (Hey, that’s my foot in that scene!) Oh, and I was once in the running for a contract role on a popular soap opera. Lost the role, but got something far better: all my children. Two and counting….
“Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.” Poet, Rumi wrote that and ever since I read it, I realized how important it is to be bewildered by everything around me. That’s what drives me to write. I find myself fascinated by new things everyday. They say: “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. So there–I don’t work. Ever. (Thanks Mrs. McNamara!) And I do put my heart and soul in everything I write.
